A week of mostly mixing and hiding from the grey cold east wind in London City. Not much to report, except the sounds, I think the sounds are exceptional.
This Episode Melodica comes as live as it gets from the Big Chill Bar in Bristol. We’ve taken over the secret kitchen, a seventies style party room on the first floor of this venue in the heart of the city of bass, the plan is to play some music and talk about the city and the local scene. In the next hour, as well as the usual selection of fine, box fresh tunes I will be chatting to some Bristol music scene luminaries. To be precise, the DJ, bingo caller and local face Suisse Tony; top beat producer Ben from Hundred Strong; Chris Farrell from Idle Hands record shop, that’s right, a shop that still sells records; and first up, Matt Anniss, also known as Sell By Dave, music journalist and the man behind the Bedmo Disco label and blog. [setlist] 1 Bedmo Disco – Boogie Down Dub – Bedmo Disco Records 2 Maze – Joy & Pain (Awon Soundwave Remix) – Bedmo Disco Records 3 Outboxx – Home – Idle Hands Records 4 Jeremy Glenn – Heartstrings (Aashton & Swift Remix) – Digital File 5 Hundred Strong – Good Man – High Noon 6 Hundred Strong – Just Like The Water – High Noon 7 Marco Bernadi – Cosmic Aroma – Future Boogie 8 Bering Straits – Apart – Apollo
Sort of circular theme this week. Something to do with playing records I suppose. Vinyl is on the agenda rather a lot, thinking about how the medium changes how you consume the message. Maybe because you choose to buy something, heavy and expensive and frankly stupid you take it more seriously and listen more intently to it than you do to a digital file that is kind of nothing.
Chris Coco’s weekly radio broadcast. An eclectic selection of brilliant new music starting with house and moving on to electronica, downtempo, acoustic and all sorts of other styles loosely connected to dance and electronic music. Let tastemaker Chris Coco guide you through his selection of the week’s best new music. This Episode everything is happening in real time as I become a beardy vinyl freak with a deck and a mixer set up on an old suitcase on the floor, trawling through 10″s and 12″s on coloured vinyl, that arrived in a package, in the post, like it’s, you know, like, the early 90s or something. Crazy.
